KIDS' RIGHTS There was a time when children had no rights. They were sold, traded and seen as possessions under the total control of their parents or whoever owned them. In the past century, laws, which were originally written to protect animals (usually pets) in the US, were extended to protect children. Up until the third decade of the 20th Century, children could be left as property in a man's will; their mothers had no right to them. Now, we see children as vulnerable and requiring the protection of law and we've extended the responsibility of reporting child abuse/neglect to anyone who has authority over those children, whether at home, in hospitals, schools or at camps.
