BURNOUT

Feeling like things are becoming too much for you lately?  Perhaps you're irritable and feel unappreciated, overworked and just need a break?  You might be experiencing the symptoms of "burnout," a common phenomenon that affects just about everyone, if they don't take time to "smell the roses."  We've put a few categories here, but that doesn't mean burnout is the exclusive domain of people in those professions.  Anyone can experience burnout.  If you're a parent, you certainly can feel the heavy burden of burnout.

Consider the fact that technology has made our work life an integral part of our at-home life and you can see that the problem needs attention.  A 2007 survey found that  20% of workers would be checking in with the office while on vacation,  77% said they felt burned out on the job, 37% of working fathers would consider less pay for a better balance of work and home life and more than 50% of the people in the survey indicated they worked under a great deal of stress.

What can you do about it?  You're probably saying to yourself that Dr. Farrell really doesn't understand, she's never been there.  It's my job, my home, my spouse, my income, my mortgage and it's all coming down on my head at once.  Yes, I do understand because I'm in a group of the prime professions for burnout--the helping professions.

What are some of the signs of burnout?  Here are just a few:

Feeling more cynical, critical and becoming sarcastic

Diminished ability to feel joy

Problems getting yourself to work

Getting to work late and wanting to leave early

Easily irritated and impatient

Little satisfaction from your achievements

Poor ability to "laugh things" off

Disillusioned about your job

Sleep or appetite changes

Frequent headache, neck or lower back pain
