In order to provide you with information which may not be readily available in your community, we've added this page to our website. If you have further questions, we would direct you to your national or regional psychiatric association.

Domestic violence should more properly be called partner violence or relationship violence or marital violence. To say that it is domestic, in my opinion, limits it to certain constrained relationships and fails to address the larger issues of violence between two people involved in an emotional, intimate relationship. Other sources of violence links can be found on our "Violence" page. The issue of violence in these relationships is serious, usually beginning with curt comments about one's abilities or lack thereof, slights at one's self-esteem, blaming, and verbal threats. Then it progresses to pushing, shoving, slapping and biting and begins to escalate until it can end in murder. Each step of the way, the perpetrator blames the victim for "making me" treat you like this. The victim is seen as deserving of the violence and responsible for what happens. It is always the victim's fault
